In this post, we are going to install the OmniSci 4.6 GPU database on an Ubuntu 18.04 AWS instance. These are the actual command lines I entered when performing the installation.

But let’s start by introducing the motivation behind GPU databases: GPUs allow fast data analysis. GPU computing should provide a 1,000X speed-up in 15 or 20 years and also offers the ability to visualize the data efficiently. Since the size of the global data-sphere will double between 2019 and 2022 (from 40 to 80 Zetabytes), increasing the speed of data ingestion, data analysis, data visualization is a necessity.

About OmniSci

OmniSci is the company behind the open-source MapD Core database, which is (quote from their github repository):

an in-memory, column store, SQL relational database designed from the ground up to run on GPUs. MapD Core is licensed under the Apache License, Version 2.0.

OmniSci is actually their new brand name, replacing MapD. OmniSci is part of the GPU Open Analytivs Initiative.

Launch Amazon EC2 Instance

From the AWS console, I launch a new instance (in Ireland in our case).

  • Step 1: Choose an Amazon Machine Image (AMI)
    64-bit (x86) Ubuntu Server 18.04 LTS (HVM), EBS General Purpose (SSD) Volume Type

  • Step 2: Choose an Instance Type
    GPU instance p3.2xlarge, 8 vCPUs, 61 GiB, 1 GPU NVIDIA Tensor Core V100 with 16 GB of memory.

This GPU has a Volta architecture. The successive NVIDIA generations are the following ones, from oldest to newest: Kepler, Maxwell, Pascal, Volta, Turing. It is important to note that the libraries from RAPIDS, the Open GPU Data Science suite, require at least a Pascal architecture, which prevents from choosing a p2 instance (NVIDIA K80 of the Kepler generation), although it is cheaper (0.90 USD per hour instead of 3.06 USD for the p3.2xlarge instance). Also, note that you need to increase the initial AWS limit of p3 instances, which is 0 by default, using the AWS Support Center (it took a few hours in my case).

Regarding the storage size, I asked for 100 GB (we can increase it later if ever we need to).

The next steps deal with network and security… After that, I can eventually start the instance. Once it is running, I can connect via ssh:

Install NVIDIA drivers

The following installation procedure is taken from the OmniSci website.

  • Update the entire system

  • Install a “headless” Java runtime environment

  • Reboot and reconnect

  • Create a group called omnisci and a user named omnisci, who will be the owner of the OmniSci database

  • Install CUDA Toolkit 10.1 from NVIDIA’s website

The $OMNISCI_STORAGE directory is where (large) files are going to be stored. It must be dedicated to OmniSci only.
